CategoriesTexting & Internet Slang

HFN stands for Happy for now, a fandom and fan fiction abbreviation also used in entertainment.

Romance ending in which the couple is together and happy but without a firm long-term commitment, such as marriage. Considered acceptable for the romance genre, unlike a sad ending.

Example: The first book ends HFN, so expect more drama in the sequel.

Usage notes

Common in series where a couple's story continues across several books, and in younger romance. Contrasted with HEA (happily ever after). Readers often list HEA or HFN in reviews so others know what to expect.
