km/h stands for Kilometers per hour, an engineering unit abbreviation.

The SI-accepted unit for road speed in most of the world, shown on speed-limit signs, car speedometers and weather reports. Common limits are 50 km/h in towns and 100 to 130 km/h on highways.

Example: The motorway limit is 130 km/h in dry weather and 110 km/h in rain.

Usage notes

Divide km/h by 1.609 for mph, or multiply by 0.278 for meters per second. Many stretches of German autobahn have no general speed limit, only an advisory 130 km/h. Speed signs in metric countries usually show just the number in a red circle. Strictly, km/h is the correct symbol, while kph and kmph are informal variants.
