CategoriesLaw & Legal

JTWROS stands for Joint tenants with right of survivorship, an estate and family law abbreviation also used in business.

Form of co-ownership in which two or more people own property equally and, when one dies, that owner's share passes automatically to the survivors without probate. It is common for married couples' homes and joint bank or brokerage accounts.

Example: The brokerage statement lists the account as "John Smith and Mary Smith JTWROS".

Usage notes

Traditionally it requires the four unities of time, title, interest and possession. A joint tenant's share cannot be left by will. One owner's conveyance of their share severs the joint tenancy and converts it to a tenancy in common. Many states also recognize tenancy by the entirety, a protected form for married couples.
