JPG stands for JPEG image file, a file format abbreviation.
Three-letter file extension for JPEG images, the most common photo format on the web and in cameras and phones. Files ending in .jpg and .jpeg are identical in content and open in any image viewer.

Usage notes
The shorter extension exists because MS-DOS and early Windows limited file names to eight characters plus a three-letter extension (the "8.3" rule), while Macs and Unix systems used .jpeg. Both forms remain in use, and renaming between them changes nothing. Camera files typically follow names like IMG_0001.JPG. Spoken as "JAY-peg", the same as JPEG.
