Jer. stands for Jeremiah, a Bible book abbreviation.
The longest book of the Bible by word count, 52 chapters recording the warnings of Jeremiah, the "weeping prophet," before and during the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem. It contains the promise of a "new covenant" written on the heart (31:31–34).
Example: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you" (Jer. 29:11) is a popular graduation verse.
Usage notes
SBL and short forms both use Jer. The Greek Septuagint version is about one-eighth shorter than the Hebrew and arranges chapters differently. Jeremiah dictated many of his prophecies to his scribe Baruch.
