JCS stands for Joint Chiefs of Staff, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Body of senior uniformed leaders that advises the president, secretary of defense and National Security Council: the chairman and vice chairman, the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Space Force, and the chief of the National Guard Bureau.
Example: The JCS met at the Pentagon to review options for the evacuation.
Usage notes
The Joint Chiefs first met in 1942 to coordinate with the British during World War II and were made statutory by the National Security Act of 1947. Since the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986 they have no operational command authority; orders flow from the president and secretary of defense to the combatant commanders.
