IRGC stands for Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Branch of Iran's armed forces created after the 1979 revolution to protect the Islamic Republic's system, with its own ground, naval and aerospace forces, the Basij militia and the Quds Force for operations abroad.
Example: The IRGC navy seized the tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
Usage notes
The IRGC operates in parallel with Iran's regular military, the Artesh, and controls much of the country's ballistic missile and drone programs. The United States designated it a foreign terrorist organization in April 2019. In Persian it is called Sepah.
