IMRT stands for Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Advanced external beam radiation technique that varies the intensity of many small beamlets using computer-controlled collimators, shaping dose tightly around complex tumors while sparing nearby organs. It is standard for head and neck, prostate and many other cancers.
Example: Oropharyngeal cancer: IMRT 70 Gy with parotid-sparing plan to reduce xerostomia.
Usage notes
The PARSPORT trial (2011) showed that parotid-sparing IMRT significantly reduced long-term dry mouth compared with conventional radiation in head and neck cancer. Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a faster, rotating form of IMRT. Planning requires detailed contouring of the tumor and organs at risk on CT or MRI.
