ICWA stands for Indian Child Welfare Act, a US law abbreviation.
Law of 1978 that sets federal standards for custody proceedings involving Native American children, giving tribes a role in foster care and adoption cases and placement preferences for extended family, the child's tribe and other Native families.
Example: The tribe intervened in the adoption case under ICWA.
Usage notes
Congress passed it after studies found that a quarter to a third of Native children had been removed from their families, most placed with non-Native families. The Supreme Court rejected constitutional challenges to it in Haaland v. Brackeen (2023). It is pronounced "ICK-wa".
