HITECH stands for Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, a US law abbreviation.
Part of the 2009 economic stimulus law that paid incentives to doctors and hospitals for adopting electronic health records and strengthened HIPAA by adding breach notification requirements, higher penalties and direct liability for business associates.
Example: Under HITECH, the hospital had to notify patients within 60 days of discovering the breach.
Usage notes
It was enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Its "meaningful use" incentive program drove electronic health record adoption among hospitals from a minority to nearly all within a decade. Breaches affecting 500 or more people must also be reported to HHS and the media.
