ICRC stands for International Committee of the Red Cross, an international organization abbreviation.

Independent, neutral humanitarian organization based in Geneva that protects and assists victims of armed conflict, visits detainees, reunites families and promotes international humanitarian law. It has a mandate under the Geneva Conventions.

Example: ICRC delegates visited prisoners of war held on both sides of the conflict.

Usage notes

Founded in 1863 by Henry Dunant and other Genevans, it is a private Swiss association with an international mandate, not an intergovernmental body. It has won the Nobel Peace Prize three times, in 1917, 1944 and 1963. It is distinct from the IFRC, which coordinates national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in disasters.
