IAD stands for Washington Dulles International Airport, an airport code abbreviation.
Main long-haul airport for the Washington, DC, area, located about 26 miles west of the capital in Northern Virginia. Opened in 1962, it is a United Airlines hub, and its main terminal by Eero Saarinen is regarded as a modernist landmark.
Example: Took the Silver Line to IAD, which finally beats the old express bus to the airport.
Usage notes
ICAO code KIAD. Named for Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. The original code was DIA, but it was changed to IAD in 1968 because "DIA" was easily misread as DCA, Washington's other airport. Dulles used "mobile lounges" to carry passengers to aircraft, and a few remain. The Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, home to Space Shuttle Discovery, sits next to the field.
