HPC stands for High-performance computing, a cloud computing abbreviation.

Using supercomputers or clusters of powerful servers, often with GPUs and fast interconnects, to run very large calculations in parallel, such as weather forecasting, molecular simulation, engineering analysis and AI training. Cloud providers rent HPC capacity by the hour.

Example: The simulation that took two weeks on the lab cluster finished in a day on cloud HPC instances.

Usage notes

Performance is measured in floating-point operations per second, and the TOP500 list has ranked the fastest systems twice a year since 1993. The US Frontier system became the first officially exascale machine in 2022. Job schedulers such as Slurm and interconnects such as InfiniBand are standard parts. Cloud HPC lets researchers burst beyond on-premises clusters at peak demand.
