H.J.Res. stands for House Joint Resolution, a political abbreviation.
Prefix for joint resolutions originating in the House, which must pass both chambers and be signed by the President like bills, and therefore have the force of law. They are often used for continuing appropriations, debt limit changes and Congressional Review Act disapprovals.
Example: Lawmakers used H.J.Res. 7 to end the national emergency declared during the pandemic.
Usage notes
Proposed constitutional amendments are also introduced as joint resolutions, but they skip the President and go to the states after two-thirds approval in each chamber. Apart from that exception there is little practical difference between a joint resolution and a bill. The Senate equivalent is S.J.Res.
