HGP stands for Human Genome Project, a genetics abbreviation.
International research effort, launched in 1990 and declared complete in 2003, that produced the first reference sequence of the human genome at a cost of about 2.7 billion dollars. Led by the US National Institutes of Health and Department of Energy with partners in five other countries, it underpins modern genomics.
Example: The HGP estimated that humans have only about 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes.
Usage notes
A draft sequence was published in February 2001, the same month as a rival draft from Craig Venter's company Celera Genomics. The 2003 sequence still left gaps, mostly in repetitive regions; the Telomere-to-Telomere consortium published the first gap-free human sequence in 2022. The HGP set the precedent of releasing data publicly within 24 hours.
