GWR stands for Great Western Railway, a rail and transit abbreviation.
British railway name used by the historic company founded in 1835 and engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and today by the train operating company running services from London Paddington to the West Country and South Wales.
Example: GWR trains from Paddington to Cornwall get busy on summer Saturdays, so reserve a seat.
Usage notes
Brunel built the original line with a broad gauge of 7 feet 1/4 inch, later converted to standard gauge in 1892. The original GWR became part of British Railways in 1948. The modern operator, owned by FirstGroup, revived the name in 2015. Fans nicknamed the original company "God's Wonderful Railway."
