HSR stands for High-speed rail, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Passenger rail operating at speeds of at least 250 km/h (155 mph) on new dedicated lines or about 200 km/h on upgraded tracks, according to the International Union of Railways. China, Japan, France and Spain have the largest networks.
Example: California's HSR project still has no confirmed date for trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Usage notes
Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen, opened in 1964, was the first. China's network exceeds the rest of the world's combined. In the US, Amtrak's Acela is the fastest service, while the California High-Speed Rail project and the private Brightline West have faced long delays and funding battles.
