GWG
Stands forGame-winning goal
CategoriesSports

GWG stands for Game-winning goal, an ice hockey abbreviation.

Goal that gives the winning team one more goal than the losing team's final total, for example the third goal in a 5-2 win. It need not be the last goal of the game.

Example: His overtime winner was his league-leading ninth GWG of the season.

Usage notes

Because the definition depends on the final score, a team's second goal in a 4-1 win is the game-winner even if scored early. Jaromir Jagr and Alex Ovechkin are among the NHL's career leaders. Shootout winners are not counted as game-winning goals.
