GTIN stands for Global Trade Item Number, a logistics, supply chain & trade abbreviation.
Umbrella identifier, managed by GS1, covering the barcode numbers used for trade items worldwide: GTIN-12 (UPC), GTIN-13 (EAN), GTIN-14 for cases and cartons, and GTIN-8. Marketplaces and search engines use GTINs to match identical products across sellers.
Example: Google Shopping disapproved the listings because the GTIN field was missing.
Usage notes
A GTIN-14 adds a packaging indicator digit so that a case of 24 cans has a different number from a single can. GTINs are assigned by the brand owner and stay with the product regardless of who sells it, unlike a retailer's internal SKU.
