GoF stands for Gang of Four, a programming abbreviation.
Nickname for Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson and John Vlissides, authors of the 1994 book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software", which catalogued 23 patterns such as Singleton, Observer, Factory and Strategy.
Example: That's the GoF Observer pattern; the subject notifies every registered listener.
Usage notes
The book's examples are in C++ and Smalltalk, and it remains one of the best-known programming books. The nickname borrowed from a Chinese political faction of the 1970s. Critics such as Peter Norvig argued that many of the patterns are workarounds for features missing from less expressive languages.
