gRPC stands for gRPC Remote Procedure Calls, a programming abbreviation.
A high-performance open-source RPC framework that uses HTTP/2 for transport and Protocol Buffers for compact binary messages, generating client and server code in many languages from one service definition. It is popular for communication between microservices.
Example: The services talk gRPC internally, while the public API stays REST and JSON.
Usage notes
Released by Google in 2015, based on its internal Stubby system, and now a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project. The name is recursive, and Google's release notes playfully give the "g" a different meaning in each version, such as "good" or "green". Browsers cannot call it directly, so gRPC-Web or a proxy is needed.
