1. Iowa
Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations
Admitted on December 28, 1846, as the 29th state, Iowa lies between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Des Moines is the capital, the Hawkeye State leads the nation in corn and hog production, and its caucuses have traditionally opened the presidential nominating season.
Example: The seed company's warehouse is in Ames, IA, near the Iowa State campus.
AP never abbreviates Iowa; the traditional Ia. appears mainly in older bibliographies and directories. IA was assigned in 1963, and IO or IW are common errors. The four I-states (ID, IL, IN, IA) are easy to confuse, so double-check codes on shipping labels.
2. Internal affairs
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
Police unit that investigates complaints and allegations of misconduct by the department's own officers, including excessive force, corruption and policy violations. Many agencies now call it professional standards.
Example: IA opened an investigation after the video of the arrest spread online.
Officers questioned by IA in administrative investigations receive Garrity warnings, from the 1967 Supreme Court case Garrity v. New Jersey, which bars using compelled statements against them in a criminal case. Critics argue that internal investigations lack independence, leading to civilian oversight boards. In aviation, IA means inspection authorization.
3. Intra-articular
Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations
Injection of a drug directly into a joint space, most often a corticosteroid such as triamcinolone or methylprednisolone, hyaluronic acid or a local anesthetic, to relieve arthritis pain and inflammation.
Example: Triamcinolone 40 mg IA right knee under ultrasound guidance.
Guidelines often limit steroid injections into the same joint to about every three months because repeated injections may accelerate cartilage loss. Aspiration of joint fluid is often done in the same sitting. IA also means intra-arterial, so orders should state the full route to avoid confusion.
4. Inter alia (among other things) (i.a.)
Writing & Everyday · Latin Abbreviations · also used in law
Signals that the items mentioned are only some of those that could be listed. It is used chiefly in legal, diplomatic and academic writing, especially in summaries of treaties, judgments and reports.
Example: The treaty provides, i.a., for joint patrols, data sharing and a dispute-resolution panel.
The full phrase inter alia is far more common than the abbreviation, which is easily misread. For people, the strictly correct form is inter alios ("among other persons"), though inter alia is widely used for both. Unlike e.g., which introduces examples, inter alia usually follows a verb, as in "the court held, inter alia, that the contract was void."
5. Inspection Authorization
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
FAA authorization added to an A&P mechanic certificate that allows the holder to perform annual inspections on general aviation aircraft and approve major repairs and alterations. Applicants must have held an A&P certificate and been actively working for at least three years.
Example: The annual is due next month, so we've booked the Bonanza with an IA at the field.
Mechanics often write "A&P/IA" after their names. Only an IA can sign off an annual inspection, while the 100-hour inspections required for aircraft used for hire can be done by any A&P. The authorization must be renewed periodically by showing continued inspection activity or refresher training.
6. Intra-arterial
Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations
Delivery of a drug into an artery, used for targeted therapies such as catheter-directed thrombolysis, chemotherapy into the hepatic artery and vasodilators in interventional radiology. Accidental intra-arterial injection of drugs meant for veins can cause severe tissue damage and gangrene.
Example: Verapamil 2.5 mg IA via the radial sheath to prevent spasm.
Promethazine injection carries an FDA boxed warning, added in 2009, about severe tissue injury including gangrene from inadvertent intra-arterial or perivascular injection. Because "IA" can also mean intra-articular, the full term should be written in orders. Arterial lines are labeled and kept separate from IV infusions to prevent mix-ups.
