Fwy stands for Freeway, an address abbreviation.
Divided highway with full access control, interchanges instead of intersections and no traffic lights. In Southern California freeways are named by number with an article, as in the 405 or the 10.
Example: Exit the Santa Ana Fwy at Fourth Street and head east.
Usage notes
Free originally referred to free-flowing traffic rather than the absence of tolls. FWY is the USPS standard. The Arroyo Seco Parkway, opened in Los Angeles in 1940, is often called the first freeway in the western United States.
