FMJ stands for Full metal jacket, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Bullet with a soft lead core fully enclosed in a harder metal jacket, usually copper alloy, which feeds reliably and penetrates without expanding. It is the standard type for military rifle and pistol ammunition.
Example: The range only allows FMJ ammunition to protect the steel targets.
Usage notes
The 1899 Hague Declaration prohibits expanding bullets in war, so militaries use FMJ rounds. Civilians often use hollow points for self-defense because they expand. Stanley Kubrick's 1987 Vietnam War film Full Metal Jacket took its title from the bullet.
