DMR stands for Designated marksman rifle, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Accurate semi-automatic rifle, often with a magnified optic, issued to a designated marksman who engages targets at longer ranges than other squad members can reach, but closer than a sniper.
Example: The DMR gives the squad accurate fire out to about 600 meters.
Usage notes
Designated marksmen are not trained snipers; they work within the squad rather than as separate teams. US examples include versions of the M110 and the Marine Corps M38 based on the M27. The role became widespread in Iraq and Afghanistan.
