FeSO4 stands for Ferrous sulfate, a drug abbreviation.
The most commonly used oral iron supplement for iron-deficiency anemia, usually as 325 mg tablets that provide 65 mg of elemental iron. It is cheap and effective but often causes constipation and stomach upset.
Example: FeSO4 325 mg PO every other day with vitamin C; recheck CBC and ferritin in 8 weeks.
Usage notes
Studies published in 2017 and 2019 showed that iron absorption is better with every-other-day dosing because daily doses raise hepcidin, which blocks absorption. Iron turns stools black. Accidental iron overdose was historically a leading cause of poisoning deaths in young children, which led to warning labels and unit-dose packaging.
