G-CSF stands for Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a drug abbreviation.
Growth factor that stimulates the bone marrow to make neutrophils, given as filgrastim or pegfilgrastim to prevent infections during chemotherapy and to mobilize stem cells for collection. Bone pain is the most common side effect.
Example: Pegfilgrastim (G-CSF) 6 mg subcut 24 hours after chemotherapy via on-body injector.
Usage notes
Filgrastim-sndz (Zarxio), approved in 2015, was the first biosimilar approved in the US. Pegfilgrastim lasts long enough for one dose per chemotherapy cycle and can be delivered by a device worn on the skin that injects the next day. Loratadine is sometimes used to reduce the bone pain.
