FERPA stands for Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a US law abbreviation.

Law of 1974 that gives parents the right to see their children's education records and limits disclosure of those records without consent by schools receiving federal funds. The rights transfer to students when they turn 18 or enroll in college.

Example: Because of FERPA, the professor cannot discuss your son's grades without his written consent.

Usage notes

Senator James Buckley sponsored it, so it is also called the Buckley Amendment. Schools may release "directory information", such as names and enrollment status, unless a student opts out. The Education Department's Student Privacy Policy Office enforces it; the penalty, loss of federal funding, has never been imposed. It is pronounced "FUR-pa".
