FCRA stands for Fair Credit Reporting Act, a US law abbreviation.
Law of 1970 governing credit reports, requiring credit bureaus to follow reasonable procedures for accuracy, giving consumers the right to see and dispute their reports and limiting who may access them. Most negative items must be removed after seven years and bankruptcies after ten.
Example: Under the FCRA, the bureau must investigate your dispute, usually within 30 days.
Usage notes
The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 added the right to a free credit report each year, available through AnnualCreditReport.com. Employers must get written permission before pulling a background report on applicants. The CFPB and FTC share enforcement, and consumers can sue for violations.
