CategoriesScience & Engineering

E85 stands for Ethanol fuel blend (up to 85% ethanol), an energy abbreviation.

Fuel blend of gasoline with a high share of ethanol, nominally 85% but in the United States allowed to range from about 51% to 83% depending on season and region. It can be used only in flexible-fuel vehicles designed to handle high ethanol content.

Example: E85 costs less per gallon, but the flex-fuel truck gets about a quarter fewer miles per tank.

Usage notes

Ethanol contains about one third less energy per gallon than gasoline, so fuel economy falls on E85. Winter blends contain less ethanol to help engines start in the cold. Brazil, where many cars run on pure hydrous ethanol, has used ethanol fuel on a large scale since the 1970s.
