1. Extension

Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations · also used in geography

Identifies an internal telephone extension that routes a call to a particular person or desk within an organization's phone system. It follows the main number in email signatures, directories and business cards.

Example: Call the front desk at 555-0142, ext. 237, and ask for Joanne in billing.

Also written x or Ext.; callers usually dial the extension after an automated greeting. The tel URI standard (RFC 3966) writes extensions as ";ext=" for click-to-call links. In computing, "ext" can also abbreviate a file extension or name the Linux ext family of file systems, such as ext4.

2. Exterior (EXT.)

Arts & Entertainment · Film, Television and Theater Abbreviations

Screenplay scene-heading prefix indicating an outdoor scene, as in "EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY". Exterior scenes affect scheduling because they depend on weather and daylight.

Example: EXT. DESERT HIGHWAY - DAWN. A pickup truck speeds past a lone gas station.

Scenes moving between inside and outside, such as driving shots, are headed "INT./EXT." Location managers plan exteriors around permits and sunrise and sunset times. Ext. is also a common abbreviation for a telephone extension.
