EURIBOR stands for Euro Interbank Offered Rate, a bond & Fixed-Income abbreviation.
Benchmark rate for euro lending between banks, published daily for terms from one week to 12 months by the European Money Markets Institute. Unlike LIBOR, it survived benchmark reforms and still sets the rate on many European mortgages and loans.
Example: Spanish homeowners' variable mortgage payments rose sharply as 12-month EURIBOR climbed above 4 percent.
Usage notes
Launched with the euro in 1999, it moved to a hybrid methodology in 2019 that relies more on actual transactions. It coexists with €STR, the euro area's overnight risk-free rate. Many Spanish, Portuguese and Italian mortgages are tied to 12-month EURIBOR.
