DSMB stands for Data and safety monitoring board, a medical research abbreviation.
Independent group of experts, typically clinicians and a statistician unconnected to the trial, that periodically reviews accumulating unblinded data to protect participants and recommends whether a study should continue, change or stop early for benefit, harm or futility.
Example: DSMB recommended stopping the trial early because benefit crossed the prespecified boundary.
Usage notes
Also called a data monitoring committee (DMC). DSMBs are expected for large, multisite, blinded or high-risk trials, and interim analyses follow prespecified statistical stopping rules. The study team usually remains blinded to the data the board reviews.
