ESV stands for English Standard Version, a religious term abbreviation.
Essentially literal English translation published by Crossway in 2001, based on a revision of the 1971 Revised Standard Version. It is especially popular among Reformed and conservative evangelical churches and in study Bibles.
Example: The ESV Study Bible includes more than 20,000 notes.
Usage notes
In 2016 Crossway announced that the ESV text would remain unchanged permanently, then reversed the decision weeks later after criticism. The translation keeps traditional theological terms such as "propitiation". It avoids the gender-inclusive approach of the NRSV and NIV 2011 in many passages.
