ESU stands for Extended Security Updates, a software abbreviation.

Microsoft program that delivers critical security patches for a product after its official end of support, giving organizations time to migrate. It has covered Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 10.

Example: We bought three years of ESU for the lab PCs that can't run Windows 11.

Usage notes

For Windows 10, Microsoft offered home users a year of ESU, initially through October 2026, for 30 dollars, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or backing up settings to OneDrive, and made it free in the European Economic Area. Businesses could buy up to three years at prices that double each year. ESU provides only security fixes, with no new features or general technical support.
