CategoriesGovernment & Politics

EESA stands for Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, a US law abbreviation.

Financial-crisis law that created the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), authorizing up to $700 billion to stabilize banks and other firms, and temporarily raised deposit insurance coverage to $250,000.

Example: EESA passed on the second attempt after the House initially rejected the bailout.

Usage notes

The House's 228-205 rejection of the first version on September 29, 2008 triggered one of the largest one-day point drops in the Dow up to that time; a revised bill became law on October 3. The Dodd-Frank Act later reduced TARP's authority to $475 billion, and most of the money was eventually repaid.
