ERC-20 stands for Ethereum Request for Comments 20, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
The technical standard for fungible tokens on Ethereum, defining functions such as transfer, balanceOf and approve so wallets and exchanges can support any compliant token automatically. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC have ERC-20 versions.
Example: Only send ERC-20 tokens to this address; tokens sent from other networks may be lost.
Usage notes
Proposed by Fabian Vogelsteller and Vitalik Buterin in November 2015 and formalized as EIP-20. The standard fueled the 2017 ICO boom, since anyone could create a token with a few lines of code. Its approve mechanism has enabled scams in which users grant unlimited spending rights to malicious contracts.
