USDT stands for Tether, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
The largest stablecoin, a token issued by Tether Limited that aims to hold a value of one US dollar backed by reserves such as Treasury bills, cash and other assets. Traders use it to move money between exchanges and hold dollar value without a bank.
Example: Exchanges list most coins against USDT, so traders rarely touch actual dollars.
Usage notes
Launched in 2014 as Realcoin and soon renamed. Tether runs on many blockchains, including Tron and Ethereum. Its reserves have faced long scrutiny; in 2021 it settled with the New York Attorney General and the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission over earlier claims that every token was fully backed by dollars. It publishes quarterly attestations rather than full audits.
