Cysto stands for Cystoscopy, a surgical abbreviation.
Examination of the urethra and bladder with a thin camera (cystoscope), used to evaluate blood in the urine, recurrent infections and urinary symptoms and for bladder cancer surveillance. Surgeons can also take biopsies, remove stones and place or remove ureteral stents.
Example: Office cysto: no bladder lesions; stent removed without difficulty.
Usage notes
Flexible cystoscopy in the office usually needs only local anesthetic gel, while rigid cystoscopy is done under anesthesia. Blue-light cystoscopy improves detection of some flat bladder tumors. Burning and pink urine for a day or two afterward are common.
