EDSS stands for Expanded Disability Status Scale, a neurology abbreviation.

Scale from 0 to 10 in half-point steps that quantifies disability in multiple sclerosis based on neurological examination of functional systems and walking ability. Scores of 4.0 to 7.0 are defined largely by walking distance and need for assistance.

Example: EDSS 6.0: requires a cane to walk 100 meters; worsened from 4.5 two years ago.

Usage notes

Developed by John Kurtzke and published in 1983. An EDSS of 6.0 means a walking aid is needed for about 100 meters, 7.0 means largely confined to a wheelchair, and 10 is death from MS. It is criticized for heavy emphasis on walking and insensitivity to cognition and arm function, but remains the standard outcome measure in MS trials.
