CategoriesBusiness & Finance

E&S stands for Excess and surplus lines, an insurance abbreviation.

Market for insuring risks that standard licensed (admitted) insurers decline, such as unusual businesses, high-hazard properties or new exposures, placed with non-admitted insurers through specially licensed surplus lines brokers.

Example: After two carriers dropped the wildfire-zone property, the broker placed it in the E&S market.

Usage notes

E&S insurers have more freedom in rates and forms but are not backed by state guaranty funds, and policyholders pay a surplus lines tax. Lloyd's of London syndicates are major E&S writers. The E&S market has grown rapidly as catastrophe risks rise.
