DOK stands for Depth of Knowledge, a K-12 education abbreviation.

Framework developed by researcher Norman Webb in the late 1990s that classifies the cognitive complexity of tasks and test items into four levels: recall, skills and concepts, strategic thinking, and extended thinking. States use it to align assessments with standards.

Example: Rewrite the question to reach DOK 3 by asking students to justify their answer with evidence.

Usage notes

DOK describes the complexity of thinking a task requires, not its difficulty; a hard recall question is still DOK 1. It is often compared with Bloom's taxonomy, which classifies types of thinking. Teachers display "DOK wheels" of verbs, though Webb cautioned against relying on verbs alone.
