CategoriesMedical

ESKD stands for End-stage kidney disease, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Newer synonym for ESRD that replaces "renal" with "kidney", in line with patient-centered language. It describes kidney failure treated with dialysis or transplant, or untreated failure with an eGFR below 15 mL/min/1.73 m2.

Example: Progressed to ESKD in 2023; started home peritoneal dialysis after access placement.

Usage notes

Journals increasingly prefer ESKD or simply "kidney failure", while US regulations and billing still say ESRD. The same shift away from Latin-derived "renal" appears in AKI replacing ARF. Both terms describe the same clinical state, so older and newer studies can be compared directly.
