DINO stands for Democrat in name only, a political abbreviation.
Pejorative used mainly by progressive Democrats for party members they consider too conservative or too willing to side with Republicans. It is less common than its Republican counterpart, RINO.
Example: Activists called the senator a DINO after she opposed changing the filibuster.
Usage notes
Modeled on RINO, it gained currency in the 2000s. Its targets have usually been moderate Democrats from Republican-leaning states or districts, whose votes reflect their constituencies. Pronounced like "dino", short for dinosaur, it invites wordplay in political cartoons.
