CategoriesMedical

DDH stands for Developmental dysplasia of the hip, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.

Spectrum of hip abnormalities in infants, from a shallow socket to a fully dislocated hip, detected by newborn exams and ultrasound. Risk factors include breech position, female sex, first pregnancy and family history; early treatment with a Pavlik harness usually succeeds.

Example: Positive Ortolani on left at 2 weeks; ultrasound confirms DDH, Pavlik harness applied.

Usage notes

Formerly called congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH); "developmental" reflects that some cases appear after birth. The Ortolani and Barlow maneuvers test for dislocation and instability. Tight swaddling with legs held straight increases risk, so "hip-healthy swaddling" is recommended. Untreated DDH leads to limping and early arthritis.
