1. Chief technology officer

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations

Leads a company's technology strategy, engineering teams and technical architecture, particularly for the products and platforms it builds and sells. In startups the CTO is often a technical co-founder who wrote much of the early code.

Example: Our CTO wants the platform migrated to the new architecture before we add more enterprise customers.

The CTO is usually outward-looking and product-focused, whereas the CIO traditionally manages internal IT systems; in smaller companies one person often holds both roles. The United States created a federal chief technology officer position in 2009. Variant expansion: chief technical officer.

2. Chronic total occlusion

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Coronary artery completely blocked for three months or longer, usually filled from behind by collateral vessels. Opening a CTO with PCI is technically demanding, using specialized wires, retrograde approaches and dissection-reentry techniques.

Example: RCA CTO with good left-to-right collaterals; CTO-PCI planned for refractory angina.

CTOs are found in a substantial minority of patients undergoing angiography for coronary disease. Success rates at expert centers now exceed 85 percent, but evidence that opening them prolongs life is lacking, so the main indication is relief of angina. In business CTO means chief technology officer, the far more common meaning.
