CIVI stands for Continuous intravenous infusion, a medication route abbreviation.
Uninterrupted IV administration of a drug over hours or days by pump, used for chemotherapy agents such as fluorouracil, for insulin and heparin drips, and for vasopressors. It keeps blood levels steady rather than peaking after each dose.
Example: 5-FU 2,400 mg/m2 CIVI over 46 hours via ambulatory pump.
Usage notes
Also written CI or "continuous IV". In regimens such as FOLFOX the patient goes home with a portable elastomeric or electronic pump attached to a port. Errors in programming hourly versus total-dose rates on such pumps have caused fatal fluorouracil overdoses, prompting ISMP recommendations to express doses clearly.
