1. Internal jugular (vein)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Large vein in the neck that drains the brain, face and neck into the brachiocephalic vein, running beside the carotid artery beneath the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The right IJ is a preferred site for central lines and dialysis catheters because of its straight path to the heart.
Example: Ultrasound-guided right IJ triple-lumen catheter placed; tip at the cavoatrial junction.
Real-time ultrasound guidance for IJ cannulation is now standard because it reduces arterial puncture and pneumothorax. The jugular venous pulse used to estimate right heart pressure is assessed at the right IJ. Patients are tilted head-down during placement to fill the vein and reduce the risk of air embolism.
2. Immigration judge
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Attorney employed by the Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review who presides over removal proceedings, asylum claims and bond hearings in immigration courts. IJs are executive-branch officials rather than Article III judges, and their decisions can be appealed to the Board of Immigration Appeals.
Example: At the master calendar hearing, the IJ set the asylum merits hearing for next spring.
Because immigration courts sit within the Justice Department, judges are hired by the Attorney General, who can also personally review Board decisions. Backlogs have grown to millions of pending cases. People in removal proceedings have no right to appointed counsel at government expense, unlike criminal defendants.
3. Injection
Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations
Rarely used shorthand for an injection that ISMP lists as error-prone because "IJ" has been read as "IV" or as "intrajugular", sending a drug by the wrong route.
Example: Pharmacy query: "Is 'B12 1,000 mcg IJ' meant to be IM?" Prescriber clarified intramuscular.
ISMP recommends writing "injection". In bedside medicine IJ almost always means the internal jugular vein, a common site for central lines, which is exactly why using it to mean "injection" is risky.
