CINC stands for Commander in chief, a military term abbreviation.

Former title of the commanders of US unified combatant commands, such as CINCPAC or CINCCENT, and the constitutional role of the president as head of the armed forces.

Example: Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, then CINCCENT, led coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War.

Usage notes

Pronounced "sink." In 2002 Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld directed that only the president be called commander in chief, and the military commands began using "combatant commander" instead. Historical documents and NATO titles still show the older form.
