COCOM stands for Combatant command (command authority), a military term abbreviation.
Nontransferable command authority over assigned forces held only by the commanders of unified combatant commands, covering all aspects of military operations, training and logistics. The term is also used informally for a combatant command itself.
Example: Each COCOM submits an integrated priority list of capability shortfalls to the Pentagon.
Usage notes
Pronounced "KO-com." Combatant command authority was created by the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986. Joint doctrine discourages using COCOM to mean the command organization, preferring CCMD, but the informal usage is widespread in news coverage and speeches.
